The Hausa Cult of Possession-Trance
In my experience this book is extremely important to the study of trance in America, Africa and along the Mediterranean because of the way that it impacts these three localities. The relationship of the Hausa Bori tradition of possession trance with other traditions like Moroccan Gnawa, Egyptian/Sudanese Zar, American Santeria/Ifa/Voudoun is quite significant due to Nigerian imigration patterns in the early 20th century and prior. The similarities bewteen Bori and the above are unmistakable but unlike any other possession trance culture along the Med the Hausa Bori are not all "people of the book."
Not only is the premise of the book extremely important to the study of trance history the manner in which it was put together is an absolute gold mine containing a more in depth look at the specifics of possession threads, symbolism, coloquialisms of possession culture, etc. I have no complaints about the book, it is simply ideal.
Those who wish to pursue a serious study of trance culture and evolution would do well to put this book on their shelves. I have found a limited supply of nicely priced ($10 or less) books but when those run out it looks like the book shoots up to about $50 NEW. Enjoy!
