Spirit Possession and Personhood by Susan J. Rasmussen
This is a really lovely book on the trance culture of the "Indigo People," also known as the Tuareg Tribe of Tunisia/Algeria. I find that this book shows a remarkable similarity to the practices described by Kapchan in Traveling Spirit Masters and together shine in direct opposition to the practices described by Boddy in Wombs and Alien Spirits. This is significant in that it shows a distinct difference in belief structure between the two ecstatic cultures despite all other similarities they may share. An understanding of Zar, Guedra, Gnawa and other trance practices of the Mediterranean would be incomplete without knowledge of the Tuareg. This book is easier to digest than Wombs and Alien Spirits but more intense than Traveling Spirit Matsers, even though it is also intended as a text book (As is Boddy's work but not Kapchan's).

A MUST READ for those interested in ecstatic practices of the Mediterranean. - Poisoned , posted 12/22/08
