Wombs and Alien Spirits by Janice Boddy
This was one of the toughest reads I have ever been put through, it was also the first book I read on the subject of trance years and years ago. So I went from zero to this. I wouldn't recommend that this be anyone's first exposure to the subject of Zar, trance or cultural anthropology as it will take longer to read and comprehend without some kind of pre-existing background. Apart from that, this is an absolutely fabulous book, extremely thorough and well researched. I would also like to note that this book was exceedingly more expensive when I bought it over a decade ago so in looking at Amazon recently my jaw hit the floor when I saw its miniscule price tag. Snag it! Buy this book! This is more written from a standpoint of the social implications of ecstatic possession ritual rather than the medical or even spiritual implications though each is covered.

This is a MUST READ for those interested in North African ecstatic ritual. - Poisoned , posted 12/22/08
